Police Unions Attacks Trump’s Jan. 6 Pardons

The Fraternal Order of Police, the largest police union in the United States, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police condemned on Tuesday President Donald Trump’s issuing of pardons and the shortest sentencing of convicted Jan. 6 rioters, Axios reported.

A joint statement a condemnation of both the Biden and Trump administrations for the pardons and commutations granted to “individuals convicted of killing or assaulting law enforcement officers.”

“Allowing those convicted of these crimes to be released early,” the statement continued, “diminishes accountability and devalues the sacrifices made by courageous law enforcement officers and their families.”

“When perpetrators of crimes, especially serious crimes, are not held fully accountable, it sends a dangerous message that the consequences for attacking law enforcement are not severe, potentially emboldening others to commit similar acts of violence.”

Trump on Monday issued a “complete and unconditional pardon” to most of the individuals who were convicted and ordered the Justice Department to drop the 470 ongoing cases related to the Jan. 6 riots. Trump commuted the sentences of another 14 but did not grant them full pardons. In all, 1,583 people were charged.
