Hawai‘i Island police have initiated terroristic threatening cases in connection to threats received by personnel at Waiākea High School two days in a row.

On Wednesday, January 5, 2022, at 9:49 a.m., Hilo patrol officers responded to anonymous telephonic threats received by Waiākea High School against one of their faculty. Police initiated a terroristic threatening case on behalf of the faculty member. Police also maintained a presence at the school while it was in session on Thursday, January 6, 2022.

After students were released from school on Thursday, Hilo patrol officers responded again to Waiākea High School at 3:05 p.m. to a report of anonymous threats made against the school. A systematic search of the school found no unauthorized persons or weapons/devices on campus and police will be on campus Friday, January 7.

Police ask anyone who may have information regarding these threats to call the police department’s non-emergency line at (808) 935-3311 or contact Detective Richard Itliong of the Area I Juvenile Aid Section at (808) 961-2278 or via email at [email protected].  

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call the island-wide Crime Stoppers number at (808) 961-8300 and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000. Crime Stoppers is a volunteer program run by ordinary citizens who want to keep their community safe. Crime Stoppers doesn’t record calls or subscribe to caller ID. All Crime Stoppers’ information is kept confidential.
